IT’S TEMBENU VILLAGE’S TURN TO FIGHT GBV USING THEATRE
At Tembenu village in Traditional Authority Mchilamwera today during the ongoing Theatre for Development (TfD) performances, chiefs and their subjects described the activity as a game changer in eliminating domestic violence in the area.
Village head Tembenu said the participation of people in the drama showed their confession that Gender Based Violence is there and has to end.
“I believe there will be a change in how we treat each other in our homes and I thank Eastern Produce Malawi (EPM) Limited and Art Global Health Centre (ArtGlo) for this initiative,” said VH Tembenu.
She said a fine of one goat has been set to any perpetrator of GBV.
On her part 21-year-old Fynes Namakhwa from Tembenu village stated physical abuse mostly wife battering and economic abuse where husbands deny their wives to participate in business activities let alone tell them how much they receive at their work as some of the forms of GBV taking place in the village.
She echoed VH Tembenu’s sentiments that the Wednesday’s performance will empower women to fight against GBV.
“Through this drama, we have learnt GBV reporting mechanisms and that time of suffering in silence is over,” said Namakhwa, a married woman with two children.
EPM through ArtGlo is fighting GBV through theatre in communities surrounding it’s tea and macadamia estates in Mulanje and Thyolo Districts.
